Trails and activities

Swing through rope bridges and walkways, ride through the woods of Garfagnana on a mountain bike or follow a hidden trail

Everyone walks away with a different experience: at Selva del Buffardello Adventure Park, every day brings a new discovery — of your limits, and the desire to go beyond them. The activities are organised by difficulty level, so visitors of all ages can have a great time with complete peace of mind.

Adventure trails in the trees

The heart of the park. 10 suspended trails among the treetops — from easier routes for young explorers to higher and more challenging ones for those seeking a thrill.

  • 3 trails for children (from 100 cm in height)
  • 7 trails for teens and adults (from 140 cm in height)

Rope swings, suspension bridges and zip lines reaching up to 15 metres above the ground, always in complete safety thanks to a carabiner system and the constant presence of qualified instructors.
Before heading out, every participant receives certified equipment and takes part in a short briefing session with the park staff: a few practical exercises to learn the ropes… then off you go!

  • Average duration: from 1h30 to 3h
  • Suitable for families, adult couples, groups, schools and team building
  • Available all year round by reservation

A special message from the Selva instructors

Want to make the most of your adventure trail experience? If you’re a first-timer, start with the easier routes — green and blue — to get a feel for it. If you’re looking for a challenge, go for the red trail (split into two sections) or the black one — the most demanding of all.
Our tip: don’t save the black trail for last! It takes time, energy and full concentration.

At any point, you can count on the staff: they’ll guide you, support you, and help you enjoy the adventure in complete safety.

Take a deep breath, let go and fly!

Guided hikes and trekking routes

A pair of comfortable shoes is all you need to set off towards new views. From the park, it’s possible to organise nature trails through the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park and the Apuan Alps, accompanied by expert guides.

Routes are available at different levels of difficulty:

  • Easy walks for families with children
  • Challenging treks for experienced hikers

Wayfinding is made easier by the excellent trail signage maintained by the CAI group, so you’ll never lose your way.

  • Variable duration (2–6 hours)
  • Available all year by reservation
  • Flexible group sizes — families and adults
  • Included: qualified guide and support throughout the hike

Winter snowshoeing

When the forest is covered in snow, snowshoes become the perfect way to explore the mountain. These guided hikes take place around the park and offer unexpected views of Garfagnana dressed in white.

  • Activities for adults and families: minimum age depends on the chosen route
  • Included: certified guide, snowshoe and pole rental

MTB and e-bike experience

If two wheels are more your style, you’ll find marked MTB trails and adventure routes for e-bikes suitable for all levels.
The Garfagnana is a true haven for those who love cycling through scenic climbs, forest tracks and medieval villages. Along the way, refreshment stops offer a chance to rest and recharge after a good ride.

Electric bikes are available for hire, with the option to join guided tours directly from the park — available on request, all year round.

  • Suitable for families, groups and sport enthusiasts
  • Included: experienced guide

More than trails: a place for everyone, at every pace

Adventure is just one part of the day. Here, every family member can find their own space and rhythm. While older kids — at least 1 metre tall — challenge themselves on zip lines and rope bridges, those who prefer a more relaxed day can enjoy the calm of the picnic area under the chestnut trees.

Park entry is free, so even if you’re not taking part in the adventure trails, you can still unwind in the greenery.
Have a little one who’s not quite “tall enough” yet? No problem — there’s a play area with swings, a slide, spring rides and a sandbox. There are also balance bikes for their first two-wheeled adventures.

Bring your own packed lunch, or grab a snack at the park’s bar — it’s up to you.

And for our youngest visitors: nursery toilet and changing table available.

Dogs are always welcome, as long as they’re kept on a leash — there are lots of people around, and someone might be afraid of your pup. It’s all about respect for everyone’s needs.

School trips and educational workshops

School outings and hands-on learning in nature

At Selva del Buffardello Adventure Park, learning is child’s play. All educational activities are designed for school groups of all levels, combining trails, guided hikes and outdoor workshops that engage the body, emotions and social skills — always with a focus on safety and fun.

Programmes are customised according to the students’ age and educational goals, and also include inclusive options for children and teens with disabilities or limited mobility.
Nature becomes a training ground for life — a space to move freely, build trust, cooperate and explore together.

Activities include:

  • Guided forest walks and excursions
  • Outdoor workshops on plants, wildlife and the environment
  • Adventure trails in complete safety, learning through play

Available all year round, depending on weather and school needs.

Adventure park in Garfagnana

The only adventure park in Garfagnana

Set in the heart of a mountain forest yet easy to reach by car, Selva del Buffardello Park — located in the municipality of San Romano — is the only park in the area offering certified acrobatic courses. Nestled within the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park, it has been welcoming guests with kindness and smiles for over 20 years, thanks to a dedicated team with solid expertise and deep local knowledge.

From here, you can also reach the magical Verrucole Fortress with a pleasant 30-minute walk along an easy scenic trail.

And if you’re up for a little more exploring, just a 15-minute drive takes you to the Orecchiella Nature Reserve — a true gem for lovers of mountain flora and wildlife.

Valentina, Manuel and Matteo

Childhood dreams that grew into something big

At Selva del Buffardello, adventure is more than just an activity — it’s a life choice. Behind every pulley, behind every laugh echoing through the trees, there’s a team that turned their passion for nature and human connection into a profession.
Valentina, Manuel and Matteo, the minds and muscles behind the project, brought their experience and professionalism back to their beloved Garfagnana after years spent working in other adventure parks across Italy. They saw great potential in this land — and decided to build their future here.

Over more than 20 years of activity, they’ve watched whole generations grow up — quite literally.

“More and more often, we meet young people who say: ‘I used to come here with my school… now I’d love to work with you.’ Every time, it’s a real emotion,” says Matteo.

Those same kids who once swung through the ropes dreaming of flying are now part of a growing project. Some join through school-to-work programmes, others take on their first summer job and learn to be more independent. And then there are the future nature guides, who choose Selva for their mandatory internships — and might return someday as seasoned professionals.

“Our mission is to offer visitors a memorable experience, but also to build a living, healthy ecosystem — one that shapes people, creates jobs and leaves a mark,” says Valentina.

Empathy is the first “piece of gear” every staff member needs, and that will never change, generation after generation. Working in the world of outdoor recreation is a daily challenge: “When someone comes to the park, they’re looking for joy and lightness. And it’s our job to give them that,” says Manuel.

This park was created for that very reason: to give children space to dream — and a safe place to come back to, even as grown-ups, now with kids of their own.
