Trekking to Monte Sumbra: the Prince of the Apuan Alps in Tuscany

The trail begins at the Capanne di Careggine and leads to the summit of Monte Sumbra (1769 m), famously known as the Prince of the Apuan Alps for its majestic and isolated position.

• A spectacular natural split: an extraordinary natural feature where only one person can pass at a time, making it a truly unique experience.
• The remains of ancient agricultural terraces: ruins of ancient agricultural terraces, once used for alpine pastures, narrating the history of the Capanne.
• Immense centuries-old beech forests: vast centuries-old beech forests leading to a balcony overlooking the southern face of Monte Sumbra and its majestic 500-metre-high marble wall.
• The Marmitte dei Giganti: deep cylindrical cavities sculpted over centuries by water and stones, creating a stunning natural masterpiece.

From the summit, enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the entire Apuan Alps range, the nearby Apennines, and Lake Vagli, which hides the submerged village of Fabbriche di Careggine, visible only when the lake is drained.
